Waymo Drops the Dallas Waitlist: 150,000 Served, Now Open to All Riders

Waymo opened its Dallas robotaxi service to the general public on August 4, 2026. Since launching in February with a selective interest list, the company has given nearly 150,000 Dallas riders access to its fully autonomous fleet. That access is now unrestricted - anyone can download the Waymo app and hail a ride.

What Changes

The move from waitlist to open access is Waymo’s standard market maturation step. It ran the same playbook in San Francisco and Phoenix before opening both to all riders. Dallas had been operating selectively since February: riders applied from an interest list, and Waymo expanded access in batches while building operational confidence in the market.

The fleet in Dallas is fully driverless. No safety driver. The vehicles navigate without human backup in the cab.

What’s Coming

Two route expansions are staged for later this year:

Love Field Airport. Waymo is currently running fully autonomous testing at the Dallas Love Field Airport terminals. Airport service is not yet available to public riders. This is consistent with how Waymo expanded in Phoenix, where airport service came after city baseline was established.

Freeways. Waymo said it will soon begin fully autonomous freeway testing in Dallas, which it described as the final step before offering freeway routes to public riders. For context: Waymo has not offered freeway routing in most markets because the edge cases on highway-speed merges and lane changes required more validation.

Accessibility

The service is already used for accessibility-dependent transportation in Dallas. Epilepsy Foundation Texas noted that Waymo is providing independent mobility to people with conditions that limit their ability to drive - a use case where the reliability of no-driver-needed transportation has direct medical relevance.

Market Positioning

Waymo has now opened four US markets to general public access: San Francisco, Phoenix, Austin, and Dallas. Los Angeles remains invite-only. The company is separately under a fleet recall related to a vehicle swept into a creek in Phoenix, addressed via OTA fix. That incident has not affected Dallas operations.

The Dallas expansion comes as Waymo faces growing competition from autonomous vehicle deployments by Chinese operators in domestic markets and from early-stage US entrants. Waymo’s differentiation remains its years of driverless operational data in complex urban environments and its Alphabet-backed safety testing rigor.
