Sora 2 Pro Arrives on OpenRouter at $0.30/Second — OpenAI's API Video Strategy Takes Shape
OpenAI’s Sora 2 Pro is now available through OpenRouter at $0.30 per second of generated video, formalising the transition from a consumer product that burned at $1 million per day to a developer API priced for commercial use cases.
The Product
Sora 2 Pro is the production-quality variant of Sora 2, which launched in September 2025. The Pro tier targets 1080p exports — up to 1920×1080 or 1080×1920 — with generation lengths of 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 seconds. The model delivers physics-accurate motion, synchronized dialogue and sound effects, and consistent world-state persistence across shots.
Every output carries C2PA metadata provenance and SynthID-style watermarking. The original Sora product launched in December 2024 without robust provenance infrastructure; Sora 2 Pro ships with it standard.
The companion tier, sora-2, is tuned for speed and lower fidelity — suitable for rough cuts, social content, and iteration — and prices below the Pro rate.
The Economics
At $0.30 per second, a 20-second Sora 2 Pro clip costs $6.00. A four-second clip costs $1.20.

The 6x premium over Veo 3.1 Lite is deliberate positioning. Sora 2 Pro targets high-value production pipelines — cinematic footage, marketing assets, commercial content — not commodity creative generation.
Context: From Consumer to API
OpenAI confirmed the shutdown of Sora.com on April 26, 2026. The consumer product ran at infrastructure costs that didn’t support the subscription pricing model. The API path — metered per second, sold to developers building production pipelines — is the economically viable version of the same underlying technology.
OpenRouter’s integration puts Sora 2 Pro alongside every other frontier model in a unified billing interface, cutting the integration barrier for studios and agencies already on the platform.
Market Position
Professional video generation in 2026 has three credible API options:
Sora 2 Pro (OpenAI): Physics realism, synchronized audio, C2PA provenance. Highest price per second. Targets professional production.
Veo 3.1 (Google): Arena Video contender, competitive pricing at $0.05–$0.15/second. Strongest breadth of capabilities for the cost.
