xAI Co-Founder Babuschkin Raises $1.1B for River AI — Nvidia, AMD, General Catalyst, and YC All In Before a Product Ships

Igor Babuschkin, one of xAI’s founding engineers, has raised $1.1 billion for River AI in a combined seed and Series A round. General Catalyst and AMP PBC led. Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek also participated.

The company has not shipped a product.

The Round

At $1.1 billion, this sits among the largest pre-product fundraises in AI. It matches the round raised by London lab Ineffable Intelligence in June — David Silver’s effort to build on reinforcement learning — and exceeds Hark’s $700 million and Recursive Superintelligence’s $650 million. The pattern of nine-figure seeds from founder-credentialed labs continued across 2026; River AI is the highest-value entry in that series.

AMP PBC, which co-led, is an AI-focused investment firm founded in 2026. It has moved quickly since launch, taking anchor positions in multiple frontier-focused rounds.

Babuschkin’s Background

Babuschkin joined xAI from DeepMind, where he had worked on reinforcement learning systems. At xAI he was part of the founding cohort that built the original Grok. His departure from xAI to start River AI was among the more significant founder exits of the year — Grok V9 has since grown to 1.5 trillion parameters, and Babuschkin was present for the architecture work that preceded that scale.

The hardware participants — Nvidia and AMD — follow their established pattern of placing compute commitments alongside frontier lab bets. Both have taken positions in labs they expect to become large GPU customers. Temasek brings sovereign-capital backing; YC’s presence at this scale is unusual but consistent with YC’s 2026 expansion into large frontier bets.

What River AI Is Building

No product or capability description has been published. The round structure and founder profile suggest foundation model work rather than application layer development, but that is inference from context, not a disclosed plan.
