Bezos' Prometheus Closes $12B at $41B to Build an Artificial General Engineer

Prometheus, the physical AI startup co-founded and co-led by Jeff Bezos, has closed a $12 billion funding round at a $41 billion valuation. JPMorgan and BlackRock led. The company launched earlier this year with $6.2 billion.

The new round adds $5.8 billion in six months and arrives with a public mission statement: build an artificial general engineer — an AI system capable of designing and optimizing physical products that currently require decade-long development cycles.

What Prometheus Is Building

The target domains are distinct from every other AI frontier lab. Prometheus is not building a language model for chat or a coding agent for software. The products it wants to help design include jet engines, custom chips, bridges, medical devices, consumer electronics, aerospace systems, vehicles, and biologic drugs.

The unifying constraint in these domains is physics. Software bugs are fixed with a commit. A turbine blade that cracks under thermal stress costs lives and millions in recall. Every design iteration in physical engineering must survive physics, materials science, manufacturing limits, cost constraints, and safety testing before it can be validated. That validation loop — not the idea itself — is what takes years.

Bezos’s illustration of the problem: if you ask an engineer to redesign an existing jet engine to deliver 10% more thrust, the result is typically a 10-year engineering program. Prometheus wants to compress that to months by letting an AI explore the full design space against physics constraints, cost models, and manufacturing tolerances simultaneously.

Co-CEO Vik Bajaj, a longtime Bezos collaborator, is running the technical execution alongside Bezos. The company’s position is that frontier AI capability is now sufficient to tackle physical engineering as a primary domain — the models can reason across enough constraints in parallel to generate designs that are actually buildable.

The Funding Signal

A company that has not broadly shipped a product just raised $12 billion at a $41 billion valuation. The investor logic is not about current revenue. It is about the infrastructure required to run this kind of AI at scale.

Physical engineering AI requires more than a language model. It requires simulation environments, massive training datasets derived from proprietary engineering records (which few organizations will share), tight integrations with CAD and manufacturing software, and enough compute to run millions of simulation iterations per design cycle. The capital is being deployed largely against compute, industrial data acquisition, and the operational infrastructure to keep that hardware busy.

The frontier model race has already established the pattern: the scarce assets are not algorithms but clustered GPUs, power contracts, high-bandwidth networking, and cooling capacity. Prometheus is applying the same capital-intensive infrastructure logic to a narrower, higher-value problem — and raising accordingly.

Bezos on Jobs

Speaking on CNBC on the day of the announcement, Bezos pushed back directly on predictions that AI will eliminate professional work.

His position: AI will cause a labor shortage, not mass unemployment. His example was software engineering. An engineer who spent years writing code manually is about to receive a tool that multiplies their output by an order of magnitude. The result is not fewer engineers — it is more things worth building, executed faster, by the same people.

The framing is notably specific. Bezos did not argue that AI displacement will not happen broadly. He argued that the productivity surplus creates new demand faster than the displacement removes roles. Whether that holds for physical engineering — a domain with long capital cycles and tightly constrained headcounts — is the bet Prometheus is implicitly making.

The $41 billion valuation is based on the assumption that a 10x compression of physical engineering timelines is worth a great deal more than the current enterprise software market, and that Prometheus has a credible path to build the tool that achieves it.
