Perplexity Launches Personal Computer: A 24/7 Mac Agent That Owns Your Files and Apps

Perplexity has shipped Personal Computer for Mac, a local orchestration layer that positions the company directly against OpenAI Codex and Apple Intelligence for control of the desktop AI stack.

The feature integrates with the Perplexity Mac App and gives the agent simultaneous access to local files, native Mac apps including Mail, Calendar, and iMessage, and the browser — from the same session. The bottleneck it targets is the one cloud-only assistants hit constantly: real work lives in half-finished documents, inbox threads, and app state that no API can reach.

How It Works

The architecture splits cleanly between local and remote. Heavy orchestration runs on Perplexity’s servers, drawing on more than 20 frontier models. Local file and app access runs directly on the Mac, never forcing sensitive data to leave the machine before it needs to. The result is a hybrid that avoids the limitations of purely cloud-based agents while keeping compute-heavy tasks off-device.

A Mac mini running Personal Computer becomes a true 24/7 agent: it keeps working after a laptop is closed, persists across sessions, and can be directed remotely from an iPhone, including two-factor authentication approvals.

Distinction From Perplexity Computer

Personal Computer is the superset of Perplexity Computer, the company’s existing web and cloud orchestration product. Everything the cloud version can do, Personal Computer can also do, plus native app and local file access. For Max subscribers who have been using Perplexity Computer, this is a material upgrade, not a parallel product.

Why It Matters

Three major desktop AI agents shipped within days of each other: OpenAI Codex adding macOS computer use and 90+ plugins; Google releasing a native Gemini Mac app; and now Perplexity with local-machine orchestration. The common thread is that every major AI lab now treats the desktop as contested territory, and the differentiator is no longer model quality alone but how much of a user’s actual work context the agent can reach.

Perplexity’s approach leans hardest into local access. OpenAI’s Codex desktop agent also uses computer use but emphasises developer workflows and browser automation. Perplexity Personal Computer targets the broader productivity surface: the files, apps, and schedules that most users actually manage.
