OpenAI Pulled GPT-5.2 From ChatGPT 61 Days Before Its Documented End-of-Life
On June 10, OpenAI pushed a redesigned model picker to ChatGPT — an “intelligence picker” giving users control over reasoning effort levels. The company announced the rollout. It did not announce that GPT-5.2 had also been removed from the selector at the same time.
OpenAI’s official deprecations documentation lists August 10, 2026 as GPT-5.2’s end-of-life date. The model disappeared from ChatGPT on June 10. The undocumented gap: 61 days.
What Happened on June 10
The intelligence picker rollout introduced a tiered reasoning selector to ChatGPT for Plus and Pro subscribers. In restructuring the model access layer, GPT-5.2 was dropped from the available options without a model-specific deprecation notice and without updating the published timeline.
A separate bug emerged simultaneously: Thinking and Pro reasoning modes became unavailable on the ChatGPT web interface for a segment of subscribers while remaining accessible on iOS and Android. The OpenAI developer community team acknowledged that propagation was still underway but framed the issue as a rollout timing problem, not a model removal. GPT-5.2’s early exit was not addressed in the team’s public response.
The Documentation Gap
OpenAI maintains a deprecations page that enterprise customers use to schedule migrations off deprecated models. Publishing a sunset date is a commitment — it sets the runway production teams work against.
A June 10 removal against an August 10 published date breaks that contract. Any workflow specifying gpt-5.2 by model name would have failed silently starting June 10 for users without fallback routing. For ChatGPT Pro subscribers relying on the model through the UI, the loss was immediate with no migration path offered.
The Pattern
This is not a one-off event. OpenAI removed GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3-Codex from the Codex desktop app earlier in the same cycle, citing the Codex platform transition as context. That removal was more visible because it was bundled into an explicit product change announcement. The ChatGPT removal was incidental to a UI rollout.
The Codex model: communicate product transitions, let models go quietly with them. The ChatGPT model: restructure UI access layer, remove models in the process, update nothing downstream.
Why It Matters
Reproducibility in production AI systems depends on model pinning. A model that exists in documentation but not in the API or UI collapses the planning value of deprecation calendars entirely. If an August deadline can become a June reality without a changelog entry, the timeline is not a commitment — it is an estimate with no obligation attached.
