OpenAI's First Consumer Device Is a $300 Screenless AI Speaker — and a Bet Against the Smartphone

OpenAI’s first consumer hardware product will not have a screen. Bloomberg reported on August 6 that the company is developing a hockey-puck-sized, doughnut-shaped AI speaker targeting $300 to $400, with a 2027 launch. The device is battery-powered, portable, and designed to travel room to room in a hand.

The interface is the device itself. Without a display, lights and physical movement signal to users when the AI is listening or responding. A camera system adds surrounding visual context, while microphones handle input. The software is designed to learn about its user over time and personalize conversations.

The Product Logic

OpenAI’s bet is that ambient AI access — available throughout the home without opening an app — is a different product category from a smartphone assistant. Voice is the primary control surface. The device is intended to shift the interaction model from deliberate, app-based queries to continuous conversational availability.

That framing explains the hardware choices. Battery power over wall power makes the device mobile. No screen keeps the form factor minimal and the interaction modality clean. The camera adds context without making it a display device.

Origins and Design

The product grew out of the io team that merged into OpenAI in July 2025. Jony Ive’s LoveFrom handles the industrial design work. LoveFrom is not part of OpenAI — it remains an independent design firm — but the collaboration anchors the product’s aesthetic direction.

No release date within 2027 was given. No model name has been disclosed.

Part of a Larger Roadmap

The speaker is explicitly the first entry in a broader device family. Bloomberg’s report cited OpenAI’s longer-term ambition to build hardware that could replace smartphones — a category that no AI lab has displaced and that Apple, Samsung, and Google have defended through decades of platform lock-in.

The $300 to $400 price point positions this as a considered purchase, not a commodity smart speaker. Amazon Echo starts at $50. Apple HomePod Mini runs $99. OpenAI is targeting a different buyer: someone willing to pay for an AI-native device rather than a speaker with AI bolted on.
