OpenAI Codex Reaches 5M Weekly Users and Pivots to Knowledge Work: 6 Plugins, 62 Apps, Analysts Now the Fastest-Growing Cohort

Codex launched as a coding agent. OpenAI is now formally repositioning it as an operating system for knowledge work.

On June 2, the company announced that Codex has reached 5 million weekly active users — up more than 6x since the desktop app launched in February — and that non-developers now constitute 20% of the user base, growing more than 3x faster than the developer cohort. The fastest-growing task categories among knowledge workers: data analysis up 110% week-over-week, research up 37%, and “knowledge artifacts” (reports, memos, contracts, decks, PDFs) up 36%.

Six Plugins, 62 Apps

The June 2 release ships six role-specific plugins that go live in the Codex plugin directory:

  • Data analytics: Snowflake, Databricks Genie, Hex, Tableau. Translates natural language into data reports and change-analysis dashboards.
  • Creative production: Figma, Canva, Shutterstock, Picsart, Fal. Converts briefs into campaign boards, ad variations, and product lifestyle sets.
  • Sales: Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, Outreach, Clay, Rox, Actively. Automates follow-ups, close plans, account risk reviews, and meeting prep.
  • Product design: Figma and Canva. Audits live user journeys, turns static wireframes into clickable prototypes.
  • Public equity investing: Moody’s, Daloopa, Datasite, FactSet, LSEG, S&P, PitchBook, Hebbia. Reviews earnings, compares companies, tracks investment thesis signals.
  • Investment banking: Turns diligence into pitch materials, comp analyses, and client-ready recommendations using the same institutional data feeds.

Each plugin bundles the relevant apps, skills, and context so that non-technical users get a working configuration out of the box. Admins can restrict underlying app permissions per workspace. More verticals are confirmed: Corporate Finance, Private Equity, Marketing Strategy, Strategy Consulting, and Legal.

Sites and Annotations

Two new product features ship alongside the plugins.

Sites lets Codex output its work as a hosted, interactive web app shared via a workspace URL — not a local file. A financial model becomes a live scenario planner executives can manipulate without touching a spreadsheet. A product launch doc becomes a project board with live milestones. Partners for the ecosystem include Vercel, Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, Webflow, and Emergent. Sites is in preview for Business and Enterprise tiers.

Annotations extends the existing code-review feature to documents, spreadsheets, and slides. Highlight a chart, ask Codex to fix the label. Highlight a claim in an investment thesis, ask where it came from. Codex scopes the change to the selected region, leaving surrounding formatting and dependencies untouched. Previously, instructing an AI to update one element of a document often meant regenerating the entire file — a pattern that broke formatting and introduced errors.

The Context

This is OpenAI’s countermove to Anthropic’s Claude Cowork and Claude for Small Business, which launched agentic workflows for non-technical teams in February and May respectively. Anthropic was first to the consumer-facing web release for agent products and has been first-mover among knowledge workers. OpenAI has been slower to court enterprise knowledge workers but now enters with deeper data integrations — particularly in finance and investment banking — than Anthropic’s first-generation templates.

The internal case study released alongside the launch shows the direction. A team of three engineers used Codex to build a million-line internal product over five months with zero manually-written code, averaging 3.5 pull requests per engineer per day. The engineering output was real — the product had daily internal users and external alpha testers. What changed: engineering work shifted from writing code to designing environments, specifying intent, and building feedback loops.

OpenAI frames that as the model for every knowledge role. Codex doesn’t write the deck or the earnings model — it creates the interactive environment that lets the human steer and refine.
