OpenAI Codex Crosses 20M Weekly Active Users — 2.5x Growth in Six Weeks
OpenAI’s Codex product has crossed 20 million weekly active users, Codex head Tibo confirmed on X this week. Internal company data corroborated by CNBC places OpenAI’s combined AI programming and agent products at approximately the same figure. The milestone arrives roughly six weeks after Codex cleared 8 million weekly active users in mid-July.
The growth curve is steep. Codex launched publicly in April with a hard cap on usage that reset five times in a single week due to demand. The trajectory since:
| Period | Weekly Active Users |
|---|---|
| May 2026 | ~4M |
| June 2026 | ~5M |
| July 15, 2026 | 8M |
| August 22, 2026 | 20M |
A 2.5x jump in six weeks at this scale is unusual. Two structural drivers explain most of it.
Cursor’s integration is doing heavy lifting
OpenAI’s acquisition of Cursor — closed June 2026 — gave Codex direct access to Cursor’s multi-million developer user base. Cursor ships Codex as the default agentic model for Codex tasks across its Pro+, Ultra, and Teams plans. Developers who were already in Cursor’s IDE are now Codex users whether or not they specifically opted in.
This is distribution without a traditional growth funnel. Codex did not earn those users through a feature launch — it inherited them.
Claude Code is losing the developer platform race
User-level data from independent developer surveys and forum analysis tracked by XDA Developers and others shows a sustained shift from Claude Code to Codex over the past two months. The switch has several causes: Claude Code’s pricing on heavy agentic workloads runs higher per completed task on many common repo sizes, and Cursor’s deep integration — including terminal, file system, and memory tools — makes Codex more contextually capable inside the IDE than the standalone Claude Code CLI.
Anthropic has not published updated Claude Code user figures since May. The company’s last public disclosure cited several million monthly active users across Claude Code and API-driven developer workflows.
Grok Bot adds pressure from the other direction
xAI’s Grok Bot, which expanded this week to all Cursor Pro+, Cursor Ultra, and Cursor Teams plans, adds a third agent to the IDE. Cursor users now have Codex (OpenAI), Grok Bot (xAI), and Claude-based completions as simultaneous options within the same tool. xAI positioned Grok Bot specifically for longer-running agent tasks — writing, research, and cross-app work — carving a lane that is adjacent to but not fully overlapping with Codex’s code-focused automation.
What 20M means for revenue
OpenAI has not broken out Codex revenue separately. Based on Cursor’s published plan pricing, the 20M WAU figure suggests a large fraction of OpenAI’s developer product revenue now flows through Cursor-mediated Codex usage rather than direct API subscriptions. The commercial relationship between OpenAI and the Cursor business unit will matter for how this revenue is reported at IPO, expected in October 2026.
The 20M figure is weekly actives, not monthly. Monthly active users would be higher. At 20M weekly active users, Codex is tracking toward numbers comparable to established developer platforms. GitHub Copilot, for reference, reported approximately 15 million paid subscribers in early 2026 — though that figure counts paid seats, not necessarily active usage.
