OpenAI Is Rebuilding ChatGPT as a Superapp Before Its IPO — Codex Gets the Budget, Agents Get the Architecture
OpenAI is restructuring ChatGPT around a superapp architecture, with Codex as the primary surface and agentic task completion replacing conversational Q&A as the product’s defining capability. The overhaul is described internally as the company’s largest ChatGPT redesign and is set to begin rolling out in the coming weeks.
What Changes
The redesign makes ChatGPT the primary entry point for business software, automated task completion, coding work, and higher-margin enterprise revenue. Codex receives a larger internal budget allocation under the new structure.
Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s Codex engineering lead, described the direction: “It will transcend the actual surface… what we’re building towards is where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you… across everything in your life, be it personally or at work.”
The strategic framing is explicit: the future of the product is agents doing tasks, not chatbots answering questions.
The IPO Timing
OpenAI filed its confidential S-1 with the SEC earlier this month, targeting what would be the largest AI startup public listing in history. The superapp redesign is directly connected to the IPO timeline — the goal is higher-margin enterprise revenue as a headline metric before the roadshow.
The approach tracks closely with Anthropic’s, which grew annualised revenue from $30B to $47B in part by concentrating product development on business workflows and agentic deployments. Anthropic’s S-1 is also filed; both companies are now in a race to present the stronger enterprise revenue story to public market investors.
Platform vs. Consulting
The architecture divergence between OpenAI and Anthropic is sharpening. OpenAI is building a platform play — ChatGPT as the entry point for a broad consumer and enterprise app ecosystem. Anthropic has moved toward managed deployment: Claude Managed Agents at $0.08/hour, Claude for Small Business, finance agent templates, and deep enterprise partnerships with KPMG and Thomson Reuters.
Google’s platform strategy is the third vector: Gemini Enterprise anchored in Google Workspace, with the $920M/month SpaceX compute bridge as infrastructure backstop for surging demand.
Numbers at Stake
ChatGPT has approximately 900 million weekly users across its consumer and enterprise tiers. The Codex product reached 5 million weekly users before the redesign was announced. OpenAI’s Codex Pro plan, introduced at $100/month after token-based metering reduced the economics of the standard Business tier, signals the monetisation model the enterprise superapp intends to scale.
At its current run rate, OpenAI is behind Anthropic on revenue. The superapp redesign is the move designed to change that before the IPO.
