Notion announced June 25 that it is shutting down Notion Mail on September 22, 2026. The decision is grounded in a specific metric: more than half of Notion Mail users currently manage email without ever opening their inbox. They handed the work to AI agents instead.

“We’re going all in on using agents to run your inbox,” Notion said in its announcement.

The email client had been available to users since April 2025. It is being discontinued after less than 15 months of general availability.

The Usage Number That Drove the Decision

The >50% figure is the core of the story. Notion built an email client on top of Gmail — with auto-labelling, smart filtering, and AI-assisted scheduling — and then watched a majority of its users stop looking at their inbox. They built agent workflows that handled triage and responses autonomously, reducing the email interface to a background process.

Once most users are not using the interface, the case for maintaining the interface collapses. Notion’s decision is one of the earliest public examples of a company explicitly citing agent adoption as the reason for a product discontinuation.

What Survives the Shutdown

Notion is not exiting email. It is shifting the layer at which it competes:

• Gmail AI Connector: Search Gmail and draft replies through Notion AI. Continues post-shutdown.
• Agent email tools (Gmail): Agents that read, draft, and send email via Gmail API. Continue post-shutdown.
• Email blocks in Notion pages: Existing email blocks stay intact.
• Existing synced email databases: Remain in Notion; stop updating with new mail after September 22.

Users who rely on HIPAA coverage through Notion Mail have an earlier deadline: June 30, 2026. Notion is prompting them to transition first.

Drafts and scheduled emails will be permanently deleted if not exported before September 21.

The Broader Product Shift

On May 13, Notion launched a developer platform that lets third parties build agents directly on top of Notion workspaces. The company reported that customers have already built more than one million agents on the platform. That is the direction Notion is moving.

The Notion Mail shutdown is the logical consequence: when Notion’s own product line generates enough agent adoption to hollow out a standalone email client in under 14 months, maintaining the client is competing against your own platform.

Context: What Notion Killed Along the Way

Notion acquired Skiff in February 2024 for an undisclosed sum. Skiff was a privacy-focused email and productivity startup with approximately 2 million users. Within a year, Notion shut down Skiff’s native email service, eliminating @skiff.com addresses. The team from Skiff built Notion Mail.

Notion Mail is now also being shut down. From Skiff acquisition to Notion Mail closure, the entire thread — privacy-first email built on Skiff’s infrastructure, by the Skiff team — ran for approximately two years before being discontinued.

The Gmail integration and agent layer are what Notion is keeping. Everything that required a dedicated inbox interface is gone.
