Microsoft and Qualcomm Confirm the Copilot+ PC Brand Is Finished

The Copilot+ PC brand is dead. Microsoft’s Surface CVP confirmed in an interview that its new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models are not carrying the Copilot+ label, despite meeting the hardware requirements that defined the category — an NPU with at least 40 TOPS of processing capacity. Qualcomm SVP Kedar Kondap said computers delivering the same experiences “probably” will not use the Copilot+ branding going forward.

Neither company made a formal announcement. The withdrawal is being executed quietly, with new hardware shipping without the badge that Microsoft launched roughly two years ago to define a category of AI-capable Windows PCs.

What Copilot+ Was

Microsoft launched the Copilot+ PC designation in mid-2024 alongside updated Surface hardware. The brand was designed to communicate that a machine had sufficient local AI compute to run features like Recall, live captions, and real-time image generation — capabilities requiring the NPU threshold. The brand appeared on packaging, marketing materials, and partner hardware from Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD.

Adoption was uneven from the start. Recall, the flagship Copilot+ feature, was delayed, modified, and made optional after privacy concerns. The branding did not translate to clear consumer purchasing behavior. AI PC features available only on Copilot+ hardware were often incremental improvements on capabilities users already had through cloud-based equivalents.

What Happens to the Hardware Requirement

The 40+ TOPS NPU threshold is now effectively table stakes for current-generation laptop silicon. Qualcomm Snapdragon X series chips, Intel Lunar Lake, and AMD Strix Point all exceed it. The capability the brand was meant to signify is no longer differentiated — every new thin-and-light laptop ships with sufficient local AI compute regardless of branding.

Microsoft’s decision to drop the label rather than evolve it suggests the company views the category marketing as a net negative, or at least no longer worth maintaining. Qualcomm’s agreement indicates there is no appetite from the hardware side to keep the brand alive either.

The AI PC narrative survives. The Copilot+ label does not.
