Meta's 'Hatch' Eyes $200/Month to Build Its First Paid Consumer AI Agent Inside Instagram

Meta is building its first paid consumer AI product. Internally codenamed Hatch, it is a personal automation agent designed to handle shopping, scheduling, appointment-setting, and email tasks on behalf of users — and to do it from inside Instagram, where more than 2 billion people already spend time daily.

Internal documents and a source reported by The Information put the premium tier at up to $199.99 per month. A free version is also planned, with Hatch Plus offering five to ten times higher daily usage limits than the free tier — a reset structure identical to ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max.

What Hatch Actually Does

Hatch is a task-execution agent, not a chatbot. Users describe what they want in plain language, and Hatch constructs and runs a workflow to get it done: compare products across sites, fill out forms, book an appointment, draft and send an email. The model is persistent — it tracks progress across a session and corrects itself when a step fails.

The distinction from Meta’s existing Business Agent matters. Business Agent, already live, handles merchant support across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram from the company side. Hatch targets the consumer side: personal task delegation at the individual level, not commercial customer service.

Claude Sonnet in Testing, Muse Spark at Launch

Meta is currently testing Hatch on Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet models. At public release, the plan is to switch the backend to Meta’s own Muse Spark model, which currently ranks in the global top five on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index at score 49.

Whether Muse Spark can match Claude Sonnet’s task completion rate in agentic workflows is the key engineering question. Muse Spark’s Arena ELO of 1489 places it mid-tier relative to the models Hatch would be competing against — Anthropic’s Claude Max and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro both run frontier models with Arena ELOs above 1475.

The Distribution Advantage

Meta’s pitch to pricing analysts is not capability parity — it is distribution. While OpenClaw requires installation and ChatGPT requires an account switch, Hatch lives inside Instagram. Every user who opens the app on any Android or iOS device already has it. Google’s competing personal agent, Remy, has a comparable advantage on Android via its default placement.

Meta’s $200 tier, if it holds, would place Hatch directly alongside ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) and Claude Max 20x ($200/month). Both of those products are primarily used by developers and power users willing to pay for token depth. Hatch is priced identically but targeted at a demographic that has never paid for AI tooling before.

Timeline and Uncertainty

A broader US launch is planned for July 2026, according to The Information. Pricing is not final. Meta has not ruled out a lower entry price if testing shows the $200 ceiling strains consumer conversion.

The Commerce question runs the other way too: Meta already charges businesses for Business Agent’s enterprise tier. Hatch is a separate product line, not an extension of it. How Meta handles cross-selling between the two — and whether Hatch unlocks a new recurring revenue line — is the financial story behind the product launch.

Numbers

  • Premium tier: up to $199.99/month (Hatch Plus)
  • Free tier: available, lower usage limits
  • Distribution: Instagram (2B+ daily active users)
  • Current backend: Anthropic Claude Sonnet (testing)
  • Launch backend: Meta Muse Spark
  • Target launch: July 2026, US market first
  • Competing products: ChatGPT Pro ($200/mo), Claude Max ($200/mo), Google AI Ultra ($250/mo)
