Google Ends the Blue Links Era: Search Gets Its Biggest Overhaul in 25 Years at I/O 2026

For 25 years, Google Search opened the same way: a blank white box, a cursor, and the instruction to reduce your question to keywords. At I/O 2026, Google declared that contract expired.

The company unveiled a completely redesigned search interface built on Gemini 3.5 Flash, replacing the traditional input field with a dynamically expanding AI-powered box that accepts text, images, files, video, and open Chrome tabs. Rather than returning ranked links, the redesigned interface drops users into AI-generated interactive experiences — custom visualisations, follow-up prompts, and what Google is calling “information agents” that monitor the web continuously on your behalf.

Liz Reid, Google’s VP and Head of Search, described the update as “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago.”

The Numbers Behind the Shift

The transition has already happened at scale before today’s formalisation:

  • AI Overviews: 2.5 billion monthly users
  • AI Mode: 1 billion monthly users
  • Traditional “Web” tab: still accessible, now buried under a dedicated click

The conversion is stark. Pew Research data from 2025 found that only 8% of users clicked on a link in search results when AI Overviews appeared — versus 15% for those who did not see one. Google did not address that figure in its I/O presentation.

What Changed

The new intelligent search box rolls out globally this week, free to all users. Core features:

  • Expanded input: Accepts multimodal queries. Attach a photo, a video, or a Chrome tab and ask a natural language question
  • AI-powered autocomplete: Goes beyond keyword suggestions to help formulate the question itself
  • Generative UI: AI Overviews can now generate interactive visualisations inline — diagrams, data tools, custom widgets — built on Gemini 3.5 Flash
  • Follow-up flow: Natural-language follow-ups in an AI Overview redirect automatically to AI Mode

The premium tier gets more. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States will receive “information agents” this summer — background processes that monitor specific topics, track changes, and send alerts when set conditions are met. A second wave of tools will let subscribers build personalised mini-apps and custom widgets directly inside Search.

The Publisher Problem

Google argued that traditional blue links are not disappearing — users can still select the “Web” tab. But the practical effect is that the default experience no longer surfaces links first.

Publishers have been vocal about collapsing referral traffic since AI Overviews launched. The I/O announcement accelerates that dynamic rather than addressing it. Google’s position is that total search volume has increased, but it declined to share what percentage of that volume converts to clicks on external sites.

The company’s own ad business sits on the other side of this equation. AI Mode already runs sponsored results, and the new generative UI creates additional inventory that does not exist in the traditional blue-links format.

What It Means

Google is betting that owning the answer layer — not the link layer — is where long-term search value lies. The information agents model in particular points toward a future where Search is a persistent background service rather than a query-and-response tool.

The competitive pressure is clear: ChatGPT’s memory and persistent context, Perplexity’s research mode, and Claude’s project spaces have all demonstrated that users want an assistant that knows what they were working on last week. Google’s information agents are its answer to that.

Whether publishers, regulators, or advertisers force a course correction is a different question. For now, the blue links are not gone — they are just three taps away.
