Google Kills the Cursor, Launches Googlebook — Chromebook's Successor Ships This Fall With Gemini Baked In

Google used The Android Show on May 12 to announce two things simultaneously: a full AI layer for Android called Gemini Intelligence, and an entirely new laptop platform called Googlebook. Together they represent the clearest statement yet that Google is rebuilding its consumer products around Gemini as the operating layer, not just a chatbot bolted on top.

The headline hardware announcement is Googlebook. Built on a fusion of Android and ChromeOS — internally rumoured as “Aluminium OS,” a name Google declined to confirm — these laptops will run Android apps and Chrome natively, sync files directly from an Android phone without transfers, and ship with Gemini Intelligence deeply integrated. Five hardware partners are confirmed: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Launch is fall 2026. No pricing, no specs yet. Every Googlebook will carry a signature glowbar on the lid.

The standout feature is the Magic Pointer, built with the Google DeepMind team. Shake the cursor at any element on screen and Gemini surfaces contextual suggestions: point at a date in an email to schedule a meeting, select two images to visualise furniture in a room, combine content from multiple sources without leaving what you’re doing. It is the most visible bet Google has made that AI belongs at the cursor level, not the assistant panel level.

Gemini Intelligence on Android

The laptop announcement is paired with Gemini Intelligence for Android, which Google describes as a shift from “operating system to intelligence system.” The capabilities roll out in waves starting this summer on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, expanding to watches, cars, glasses, and laptops later in 2026.

Key features from the announcement:

  • Multi-step app automation: Gemini can work across apps to build shopping carts, book reservations, or pull context from Gmail and act on it. Google’s demo — ask Gemini to check a guest list for a barbecue, build a menu, add ingredients to Instacart, and await approval before checkout — represents the kind of cross-app agentic flow that previously required custom automation tools.
  • Gemini in Chrome on Android: Summarises web content, compares information across tabs, and automates tasks like appointment booking or parking reservations. Launching late June.
  • Rambler in Gboard: Converts casual speech to polished text, removes filler words, restructures sentences. Supports mid-message language switching, including mixed-language speech.
  • Create My Widget: Build custom Android home screen widgets by describing what you want in natural language. Gemini connects to Gmail, Calendar, and web data to build personalised dashboards.
  • Android Auto: Gemini is being integrated into the in-car experience for over 250 million cars. The company describes it as the biggest Android Auto update in a decade, including Gemini-powered vehicle Q&A (warning lights, cargo fit) and Live Lane Guidance using the vehicle’s front camera.

What It Means for Chromebooks

Chromebooks are not being killed. Google confirmed that Chromebooks will continue to ship after Googlebook launches and that all Chromebooks released since 2021 retain their 10-year security update commitment. But Googlebook is clearly where the premium and AI-forward investment is going.

The Chromebook successor has been rumoured for years under the Aluminium OS codename. By announcing before Google I/O (May 19) and with five major OEM partners already locked, Google is signalling this is a real product cycle, not a concept.

Competitive Context

The timing is deliberate. Apple’s WWDC is expected soon, where the company is expected to show a revamped Siri and deeper Apple Intelligence integration — notably, a reset led by incoming CEO John Ternus following Tim Cook’s exit. Google’s Android Show announcement positions Gemini Intelligence as further along than Apple’s on-device AI reboot, with multi-step agentic automation already confirmed for summer rollout.

Google also confirms Gemini is powering part of Apple’s own AI strategy via an existing deal — meaning Google’s AI is running on iPhones even as Android rebrands around it.
