Google Launches Native Gemini App for macOS — The Last Major AI Lab on Desktop

Google released a native Gemini desktop app for macOS on April 15, built in Swift and free for all users running macOS 15 or later. It is the last major AI assistant app to arrive on the platform: OpenAI shipped the ChatGPT Mac app in mid-2025, and Anthropic followed with Claude for Mac shortly after.

The app was built by a small internal team in under 100 days and ships with over 100 features, according to Google group product manager Josh Woodward. It integrates directly with Gemini 3 Fast, Thinking, and Pro model tiers, and supports image generation via Nano Banana and video generation via Veo.

What It Does

The primary differentiator over the web version is system integration. The app sits in the menu bar and Dock and responds to a configurable keyboard shortcut — Option+Space by default opens a mini chat overlay, while Option+Shift+Space opens the full window. Screen sharing lets users share any open window for contextual queries: a chart, spreadsheet formula, or document can be passed directly to Gemini without copying text.

The app connects to Google’s broader productivity stack: NotebookLM, Google Photos, Google Drive, Canvas, and Deep Research are all accessible from within the desktop client. Voice responses use selectable voices. Chat sessions can be set to reset automatically after a configurable duration.

Gemini for Mac is available at gemini.google/mac and requires macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later.

Competitive Position

Google’s Gemini has led mobile AI app store rankings for several months — the iOS app has held a top-three position consistently — but desktop has been a gap. Both ChatGPT and Claude on Mac have had approximately a year of traction with developers and knowledge workers who prefer native OS integration over a browser tab.

The timing coincides with broader Gemini platform expansion. The iOS 27 release, expected at WWDC, is expected to bring Gemini-powered upgrades to Siri and Apple Intelligence features under a deal with Apple. The Mac app positions Gemini as the default ambient AI layer on Apple hardware ahead of that integration — before Apple’s own operating system ships it natively.

For developers, the app exposes the same Gemini 3 model stack available via API, including the Thinking tier used for complex multi-step tasks. The screen-sharing capability has obvious utility for debugging, code review, and document analysis without leaving the working environment.
