DuckDuckGo Turns Anti-AI Backlash Into a Product: Browser Extensions Make AI-Free Search One Click

DuckDuckGo released browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox that route all search queries through noai.duckduckgo.com — its stripped-down search experience with no AI-generated answers, no chat prompts, and fewer AI images. The extensions are available now on the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons repository.

The product launch converts what had been passive beneficiary growth into an active opt-in. Since Google made AI Mode the default search experience at I/O 2026 on May 19, DuckDuckGo has watched its no-AI page traffic triple. iOS installs surged 70% in the same period. In the first week after I/O alone, overall app installs climbed by nearly a third.

What the Extension Does

Once installed, the extension overrides the default search engine setting in Chrome or Firefox and sends queries to the no-AI variant of DuckDuckGo. The result page omits the AI Overview panel, removes chat prompts from the search box, and reduces AI-generated image results. Users who already run the DuckDuckGo browser get the same configuration preserved automatically, even after clearing browser history.

The URL separation matters: noai.duckduckgo.com is a distinct endpoint from the main duckduckgo.com, giving DuckDuckGo clean traffic data on how many users explicitly want to avoid AI search — a number it is now actively surfacing in marketing.

The Market They Are Capturing

Google’s AI Mode rollout was the sharpest forcing function the privacy search market has seen since the Snowden revelations. Google’s product team made AI summaries the default answer format on May 19; DuckDuckGo’s no-AI traffic started climbing the same day and has not plateaued.

The extension strategy targets Chrome users who are Google’s own installed base. Chrome holds roughly 65% of desktop browser market share globally. Getting that audience to install a DuckDuckGo extension without switching browsers entirely lowers the acquisition barrier significantly versus the previous ask of downloading a new browser.

DuckDuckGo has historically been the privacy search default but has not had a clean anti-AI product angle before. The noai subdomain gives them a shareable URL that functions as a landing page for anti-AI sentiment. “Since Google revealed its plan for an AI search overhaul, visits to our No AI search page have tripled… and they’re still rising,” the company stated on Bluesky.

The Counterargument

DuckDuckGo still uses Bing for its underlying search index, and Bing is itself AI-integrated at the infrastructure level. The “no AI” label applies to the result presentation layer — no AI summaries, no generative answers in the box — but not to ranking signals, which involve machine learning throughout. The extension gives users a meaningfully different result page than Google’s default. Whether it is meaningfully different from what search engines have always done technically is a harder question.

The commercial opportunity is real regardless. Google’s AI Mode switch created a moment of user friction. DuckDuckGo is distributing a product that resolves that friction in two clicks. The traffic data suggests a segment of Google’s user base was waiting for exactly that option.
