Crusoe Confirms as Developer of Google's 531MW Wind-Powered AI Campus in Armstrong County, Texas
Crusoe confirmed on September 28 that it is the developer of Google’s data center campus under construction in Armstrong County, Texas, outside Amarillo. The site is engineered as an AI factory with a direct connection to two wind farms owned by Serena: Goodnight 1 at 265.5 MW, which is operational, and Goodnight 2 at 265.5 MW, which is still under construction. Combined capacity at full build-out is 531 MW.
Groundbreaking was in June 2025. Crusoe says more than 5,500 skilled laborers are on site daily as of the announcement, matching the construction pace the company set at its Abilene campuses.
Energy and Water
Crusoe co-locates data centers directly at generation sources using an “across the meter” model: the campus connects to ERCOT and draws from the grid when wind output is low, then exports surplus back when generation exceeds demand. This reduces curtailment of West Texas wind while keeping the site on a reliable supply.
The campus uses a closed-loop, non-evaporative liquid cooling system. Facility water draw is limited to domestic uses, a meaningful departure from evaporative cooling towers that can consume millions of gallons monthly at comparable scale.
Google is supplementing the announcement with its Energy Impact Fund, which has committed to efficiency upgrades in Armstrong County public buildings and homes.
Context
Armstrong County joins Crusoe’s two Abilene campuses as part of a West Texas build-out that has become the fastest-growing AI infrastructure corridor in the United States. Crusoe positions itself as an “AI factory company” that packages energy sourcing, data center construction, and cloud platform delivery as a single product for hyperscale customers.
The Goodnight 2 wind farm was itself catalyzed by Crusoe’s development at the site, adding new generation capacity rather than competing for existing allocation.
No total campus power figure was disclosed. With two 265.5 MW farms, the theoretical ceiling is 531 MW but actual contracted capacity for the data center portion was not specified.
