Cloudflare Cuts 1,100 Jobs Citing Agentic AI — Stock Falls 24% on the Same Day It Beat Earnings

Cloudflare reported $639.8 million in Q1 revenue — up 33.5% year-over-year, beating analyst consensus of $622 million — and then announced 1,100 layoffs in the same breath. The company’s stock fell 24% the following day. The sequence has become a template, but Cloudflare’s framing was unusually direct: AI agents now do the work that humans used to do.

The Numbers

  • Employees cut: 1,100 of 5,483 total (20%)
  • Q1 revenue: $639.8M, +33.5% YoY, beat by $17.8M
  • AI usage growth: +600% over three months internally
  • Stock decline: -24% day after announcement
  • Deals >$5M ARR: Record additions in Q1
  • Deals >$1M: +73% YoY

What Cloudflare Actually Said

CEO Matthew Prince and co-founder Michelle Zatlyn framed the cuts not as cost reduction but as organisational restructuring for what they called the “agentic AI era.” Internal AI usage had more than sextupled in three months. Staff across engineering, HR, finance, and marketing were running thousands of AI agent sessions daily.

“Today’s actions are not a cost-cutting exercise or an assessment of individuals’ performance,” the memo read. “They are about Cloudflare defining how a world-class, high-growth company operates and creates value in the agentic AI era.”

That framing cost the company a quarter of its market cap. Investors who in 2023 rewarded layoff announcements with stock pops have recalibrated. A 20% headcount reduction paired with record revenue and explicit attribution to AI displacement now reads as a risk signal, not an efficiency story.

The Severance Package

Cloudflare offered severance equal to full base salary through December 31, 2026 — an unusually generous timeline. US employees retain healthcare through year-end. Equity vesting accelerates through August 15 for all affected staff, with the one-year cliff waived for employees who had not yet reached it.

Context: The Agentic Pattern

Cloudflare is not the first. Meta announced 8,000 cuts in May citing AI-driven role elimination. Block, Coinbase, and a growing list of enterprise technology companies have used similar framing. What distinguishes Cloudflare is that the company simultaneously beat revenue expectations by a meaningful margin while announcing workforce reduction — making the AI attribution harder to dismiss as a cover for demand weakness.

The company’s own tooling business has grown substantially. Cloudflare shipped five major agent infrastructure products in a three-week span earlier this year, including Project Think and Mesh. The internal adoption metrics it cited — 600% usage increase in 90 days — put it among the fastest enterprise AI adopters by its own measure.

What It Means for the Market

The market reaction points to a new investor calculus: “AI caused this” no longer reads as clever management. It reads as unquantified liability. What roles are next? Where does the restructuring stop? The companies that have navigated this best have paired headcount announcements with credible product velocity stories. Cloudflare’s Q1 numbers were strong, but the 24% drawdown suggests the headcount narrative outweighed the earnings beat in investor minds.

The sector is watching. If a company with 33% revenue growth, record deal flow, and industry-leading AI tool adoption still saw its stock fall a quarter on an agentic-era restructuring announcement, the market has set a high bar for how these transitions get communicated.
