Anthropic Merges Claude Chat and Cowork, Ships Claude Docs and Slides

Anthropic is ending the two-tab problem. Starting September 16, Claude Cowork and Claude chat are a single product: one window, one conversation thread, one context layer regardless of whether the task is a quick question or a multi-hour background job.

The friction Anthropic is removing was structural. Cowork was built for longer, asynchronous work; chat was for fast back-and-forth. Users had to decide upfront which mode to open, and whatever they started in one didn’t carry into the other. The unified interface makes that choice disappear: Claude reads the task and determines what it needs.

What’s New

Two new tools launch alongside the consolidation, plus an existing one moves in:

  • Claude Docs — document creation and co-editing directly inside a conversation. Users can write collaboratively, receive edits with notes, and export as PDF or Word.
  • Claude Slides — presentation drafting from the same conversation. Output is downloadable as PowerPoint or PDF, and can be presented directly from Claude.
  • Claude Design — launched in April 2026 as a standalone tool; it now works inside any conversation thread rather than requiring a separate tab.

All three are in beta on paid plans. Enterprise administrators control rollout timing for their organisations.

The Workflow Case

Anthropic’s framing is continuity across a workday. A user can ask Claude to pull data, write a report, and produce slides — all from a single conversation — and check progress from mobile between meetings. The report and slides share the same context, so they stay consistent without manual reconciliation.

The full rollout to Pro and Max plans happens over the coming weeks. Support for additional plans follows later.

The move puts Anthropic in more direct competition with Google’s Gemini workspace integrations and Microsoft 365 Copilot, both of which embedded document and presentation tools from 2023 onward. The difference Anthropic is stressing is depth of context and task continuity — the same model that reasoned through your research also drafts the slides, without context switching.
