Anthropic Locks Opus Behind Pay-as-You-Go for Claude Code Pro — $20/Month No Longer Sufficient
Anthropic has changed the access rules for Opus models on Claude Code Pro, effective as of a documentation update published April 27. Under the new terms, Pro plan users — paying $20 per month — cannot access Opus 4.7 or Opus 4.6 within Claude Code unless they first enable and purchase extra usage credits on a pay-as-you-go basis.
The Anthropic support page for Claude Code model configuration now reads:
“When using a Pro plan with Claude Code, you will only be able to use Opus models after enabling and purchasing extra usage.”
Extra usage is a pay-as-you-go metering layer that Anthropic offers as an overflow mechanism — it activates when a user’s plan limit is reached and bills consumption beyond the cap. For Claude Code Pro subscribers who want Opus, it is no longer an overflow option: it is now the only path.

Why the Change
Anthropic has not published an official explanation, but developer commentary points to a structural mismatch: Claude Code Opus sessions are token-heavy. A single extended coding session with Opus can exhaust a Pro subscriber’s monthly allocation in minutes. The change effectively converts Opus-on-Pro from a flat-rate perk to a variable-cost add-on aligned with actual consumption.
One interpretation circulating in the ClaudeCode subreddit is that this functions as a one-time unlock — any amount of extra credit purchased would enable Opus access permanently until the credit runs out. Anthropic has not confirmed this reading.
Scope
The restriction applies to Claude Code only. Claude.ai subscribers on the Pro plan retain access to Opus 4.7 through the chatbot interface under existing terms. Enterprise and Max plan users on Claude Code are not affected.
Anthropic’s API pricing for Opus 4.7 remains $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, unchanged. Developers using the API directly are unaffected.
The practical impact falls on individual developers using Claude Code Pro as their primary coding agent. For anyone running Opus sessions routinely, the economic signal is clear: Anthropic considers Max the appropriate tier for Opus-heavy Claude Code work.
