ChatGPT's Web Share Fell 22 Points in 15 Months. Gemini Now Has 27%. Claude's Traffic Is Up 306%.
Marketing analytics firm Momentic published a Similarweb-sourced breakdown of AI assistant web traffic on June 8, 2026. The headline: ChatGPT’s share of worldwide visits to the seven largest generative AI services fell from 76.5% in February 2025 to 54.7% in April 2026 — a 22-point drop over 15 months.
The rest of the distribution as of April 2026:
| Service | Web Visit Share | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 54.7% | Down from 76.5% in Feb 2025 |
| Gemini | 27.4% | Up from 5.6% in Feb 2025 |
| Claude | 8.2% (12.5% US) | Up 306% in web visits Q1 2026 |
| DeepSeek | 4.1% | — |
| Grok | 2.8% | — |
| Perplexity | 1.5% | — |
| Copilot | 1.3% | — |
Claude’s 306% quarter is the most startling single-line item. Monthly web visits rose from approximately 203 million in January 2026 to 824 million in April — roughly 4x in 90 days. A separate Sensor Tower estimate puts Claude’s monthly active mobile app users at 56 million globally in Q2 2026, growing 640% year-over-year against ChatGPT’s 62%.
What the Numbers Capture — and Don’t
Web visits are a lagging and partial signal for these products. The Momentic dataset excludes mobile app usage, enterprise API traffic, and embedded deployments — which is where Claude and ChatGPT generate the majority of their real-world volume. Anthropic’s API revenue, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot integrations don’t show up in web visit counts at all.
The caveat cuts both ways. ChatGPT’s 54.7% likely understates its true share; so does Claude’s 8.2%. But the trend direction is internally consistent. ChatGPT’s visit count hasn’t grown over six months even as the total AI market expanded. The share loss reflects competitors capturing a larger portion of a growing pie, not ChatGPT’s absolute audience collapsing.
Gemini’s Structural Advantage
The Gemini surge to 27.4% is the most legible story. Google owns the distribution layer that ChatGPT has to pay to reach: Android devices, Chrome, Google Search, Google Meet, and Workspace. Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default AI assistant in Google Search results globally after Google I/O in May, generating AI Overviews without any user intent to navigate to gemini.google.com. Those interactions count in the measurement.
As of WWDC 2026, a custom 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model now powers Apple’s rebuilt Siri — reaching approximately 2.2 billion Apple devices with a rollout starting September. Neither Apple’s Siri traffic nor enterprise Google Workspace AI sessions are included in the Momentic web-visit data.
Why Claude’s Growth Is Different
Claude’s web traffic surge is a spillover effect, not a consumer product win. The Momentic data shows claude.ai web visits rising, but the underlying driver is enterprise and developer adoption through Claude Code, API access, and third-party integrations. Sensor Tower found that US ChatGPT users who installed Claude in Q1 2026 reduced their time in ChatGPT by about 5% within a month — a measured substitution rate, though not yet a mass migration.
Claude’s 12.5% US web share versus 8.2% globally signals stronger developer and professional penetration in the US market, consistent with Anthropic’s ARPU data showing 73% of Claude’s weekly users earning over $100K annually.
The Three-Way Race Frame
The AI assistant market has stopped behaving like a monopoly. ChatGPT held 76-87% web share depending on the measurement date a year ago. It now holds 54%. The remaining share is divided three ways — Gemini through distribution scale, Claude through professional and developer penetration, and a long tail of DeepSeek, Grok, and Perplexity serving distinct audiences.
That fragmentation is structural, not cyclical. The distribution moats each company has now — Google’s Android/Search integration, Anthropic’s enterprise and developer relationships, OpenAI’s consumer brand — are not easily reversed by a single model release. Fable 5 will affect enterprise benchmarking and developer retention. It won’t move ChatGPT’s web share by 22 points in six months.
