OpenAI Opens ChatGPT Health to All US Adults: Apple Health, Medical Records, Personal AI

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health broadly on July 23, 2026, opening the feature to every US adult 18 and older after a limited pilot. The expansion brings two integrations that move the product into genuinely new territory: a live connection to Apple Health on iPhone, and the ability to reference connected medical records during conversations.

The Apple Health link pulls in fitness metrics, vitals, sleep data, and activity history. The medical records integration lets users feed real clinical data into their ChatGPT sessions, giving the model context that no health chatbot has historically had access to at this scale.

What Changed

The original pilot was invite-only and restricted to a small test group. The July 23 rollout removes that gate. Any US resident over 18 with a ChatGPT account can now activate ChatGPT Health from their profile settings, authorize Apple Health on their iPhone, and optionally connect their health provider.

The feature runs on top of the existing ChatGPT interface rather than as a separate product. Users can ask questions about their own health data directly in conversation: trends in their sleep, patterns in activity, or whether a recent lab value is within normal range. The AI responds with that data in context.

The Pivot This Represents

Previous AI health tools have operated as glorified search engines for generic information, legally required to stay vague and unable to reference anything specific to the user. ChatGPT Health sidesteps that limitation by having the user consent to share their own data, which OpenAI then processes under a separate health data agreement distinct from standard ChatGPT terms.

The shift is significant. At scale, this gives OpenAI a health AI product that is personalized, continuously updated via Apple Health sync, and available to the ~100 million monthly users already on ChatGPT. No signup for a separate medical app required.

The Risks Alongside It

The US health regulatory environment creates real exposure. HIPAA applies when health data is involved, and OpenAI’s data handling agreements are now in scope for any user who connects medical records. OpenAI has disclosed a separate data use policy for ChatGPT Health that it says limits training use and requires explicit consent.

Healthcare-specific AI competitors, including Corti (which topped OpenAI’s own clinical benchmark with a 60.5 score versus ChatGPT for Clinicians’ 59.0) have built their entire products around HIPAA compliance and clinical validation. ChatGPT Health enters that space with a massive distribution advantage but a lighter regulatory track record.

The EU and China remain blocked from the feature at launch.
