iOS 27 Ships to All Devices - Siri AI Exits Beta After Three-Month Preview
Apple shipped iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, and watchOS 27 on September 14, completing the transition from beta program to general availability - Siri AI moves from the public beta (opened in July) to the standard software update channel, requiring no beta enrollment of any kind. The feature remains in beta designation, requires hardware running iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and is limited to English at launch.
The update makes Siri AI - first previewed at WWDC26 in June - available in the standard software update channel for the first time. Apple still classifies it as a beta feature that users must opt in to via Settings, and some regions may require a waitlist. The key change: no developer enrollment is needed to access it.
What Siri AI Delivers at Launch
The rebuilt Siri is a departure from the previous version’s lookup-and-read model. It can follow multi-step natural language instructions, understand on-screen context to execute actions within apps, and chain together tasks across Apple’s own software stack. The assistant can draft messages, pull calendar context, query photos and documents, and interact with third-party apps that have implemented the new APIs.
Siri AI in iOS 27 also supports integration with external model providers. Apple finalized a multi-year foundation model partnership with Google in January 2026 — reported at approximately $1 billion annually by Bloomberg — to back complex requests when its on-device model reaches its limits. Complex requests that exceed on-device capability route automatically through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, backed by the Gemini partnership. Apple’s per-query permission prompt applies only to explicit third-party extensions, such as ChatGPT integration, not to Private Cloud Compute routing.
The watchOS 27 release brings a version of Siri AI to Apple Watch that can summarize recent conversations and notifications; Apple Watch Series 12, announced September 9 and shipping September 18, is positioned as an early recipient of watchOS 27 audio intelligence features, with Siri Recaps capabilities planned for a later beta phase.
Scale of the Rollout
The public release marks the first time the rebuilt Siri reaches the full installed base. Developer beta access since June covered a narrow slice of users willing to run pre-release software. General availability across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS in a single update cycle is Apple’s standard distribution mechanism, reaching hundreds of millions of devices over the first 24 to 48 hours of rollout.
Siri AI on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS is blocked in the EU due to ongoing Digital Markets Act compliance disputes; EU users can still access Siri AI on macOS Golden Gate. In mainland China, the feature is unavailable across all platforms pending regulatory approval.
Competitive Context
The September timing is deliberate. Apple’s fall hardware and software cycle puts Siri AI in front of users days ahead of the iPhone 18 Pro launch on September 18, positioning the feature as a draw for buyers upgrading from older hardware. Google is shipping Gemini as the default on Pixel 11, while Samsung has built Galaxy AI into the Fold 8 and Flip 8 lines.
For Apple, the shift matters internally as well. Siri’s reputation for limited capability compared to ChatGPT and Google’s assistant has been a friction point in consumer perception. Shipping via the standard update channel — even if still formally labelled beta — is the clearest signal yet that Apple considers the product ready for a general audience.
