Anthropic Puts Claude Inside Microsoft Word With Native Tracked Changes — Legal Review Is the Opening Move

Anthropic has completed its Microsoft Office sweep. After launching Claude inside Excel and PowerPoint, the company has released a beta add-in for Microsoft Word where every AI-generated edit arrives as a native tracked change — the same redline format that lawyers, editors, and compliance teams have used for three decades.

The tracked-change integration is the critical design decision. Rather than displaying Claude’s suggestions in a separate pane or chat interface, every rewrite, insertion, and deletion appears exactly as if a human reviewer had made it in Word’s own revision system. Accepting or rejecting Claude’s edits works identically to reviewing a colleague’s markup.

Legal contract review tops Anthropic’s list of positioned use cases. That framing is deliberate: contracts are high-value, high-volume documents where small redlines carry large consequences and where the existing workflow — share, mark up, track, accept — is already standardised across every law firm and corporate legal team.

What the Integration Does

Claude inside Word can review an entire document and propose edits in response to plain-language instructions. The integration can argue against existing clauses, suggest restructuring, flag ambiguous terms, and rewrite sections — all within the document’s native revision history.

The launch follows Anthropic’s prior Office rollouts: Claude in Excel brought data analysis and formula generation; Claude in PowerPoint handled slide drafting and restructuring. Word completes the productivity suite and puts Claude inside the document types most commonly routed through enterprise compliance workflows.

Enterprise Distribution, Not Consumer Expansion

The Microsoft Office integration is not a consumer play. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have a combined enterprise install base measured in hundreds of millions of seats, with usage mandated or deeply embedded across regulated industries — law, finance, healthcare, government.

Anthropic is the second major AI lab to integrate directly inside Office, joining Microsoft’s own Copilot. The difference: Copilot is built around Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI stack. Claude in Word gives enterprise teams a competing AI layer inside the same interface, without migrating to a different tool.

The beta is live for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise Claude plan subscribers. Rollout is phased.

The Stakes for Document AI

The legal contract review angle is not incidental. Legal document review is one of the largest enterprise AI markets — estimated at several billion dollars annually — and it is exactly the category where AI-generated suggestions being native tracked changes rather than external output matters most. A redline from Claude that looks like a redline from a partner carries more procedural weight than an AI summary in a sidebar.

If the integration holds quality through beta, Anthropic has a credible path into enterprise legal tech without building a standalone product.
