Anthropic Launches Claude Design: Conversational Prototyping That Sent Figma Down 7%
Anthropic launched Claude Design on April 17, a research-preview product that turns plain-language prompts into prototypes, wireframes, slides, and marketing materials. The tool is built on Claude Opus 4.7 and is available now to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers at claude.ai/design.
Figma shares fell 6.84% on the news — investors reading the announcement as a direct competitive threat to the dominant collaborative design platform.
What It Does
Claude Design handles the full design-to-delivery chain:
- Prototypes and wireframes from a text prompt, an uploaded document (DOCX, PPTX, XLSX), or a web capture of a live site
- Pitch decks and marketing collateral in minutes, on-brand from the first output
- Code-powered prototypes with voice, video, shaders, 3D, and embedded AI — not just static layouts
- Team design systems: at onboarding, Claude reads a team’s codebase, Figma files, font folders, and brand notes, then applies that system automatically to every subsequent project
Editing works through conversation, inline comments, direct text edits, or custom sliders Claude generates for spacing, colour, and layout. Collaborative editing is supported: multiple teammates can work in the same Claude session.
Completed designs export as ZIP, PDF, PPTX, standalone HTML, or directly to Canva. When a design is ready to build, a single instruction packages the design intent and assets for handoff to Claude Code.
Access and Limits
Usage is tracked separately from standard Claude chat and Claude Code limits. Subscribers get weekly allowances that sit alongside existing limits. Enterprise customers have the feature off by default — an admin must enable it in organisation settings. Enterprise users on usage-based pricing receive a one-time credit covering roughly 20 typical prompts, expiring July 17.
Anthropic has not commented on pricing for heavy users or a general availability timeline.
Market Context
Claude Design enters a competitive field that includes Adobe Firefly, Canva’s AI features, Lovable, and Google’s recently launched Stitch (a Galileo AI acquisition integrated with Gemini 3). Most existing tools augment traditional design workflows. Claude Design’s bet is different: replace the blank canvas entirely for users who lack design expertise, while still producing assets professional designers can polish.
Early partners — Canva, Brilliant, and Datadog — report multi-week design projects completed in two prompts or fewer.
Figma’s 6.84% drop reflects the market’s read on the category risk. Anthropic has not commented directly on the comparison.
