AMD Buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 Billion
AMD is acquiring World Labs, the spatial intelligence startup co-founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at $8.2 billion. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. The transaction is expected to close before the end of 2026, subject to regulatory clearance.
World Labs was founded in 2024 with Li as CEO, alongside co-founders Justin Johnson (Li’s former Stanford PhD student and a University of Michigan professor), Christoph Lassner (previously at Meta and Amazon), and Ben Mildenhall. The company focuses on large world models — systems that build persistent, three-dimensional representations of physical environments. That capability sits squarely in what AMD sees as the next layer above raw inference: models that reason about space, time, and causality, not just tokens.
The Strategic Logic
AMD and World Labs have been close. The two companies announced an inference optimization and training partnership last year, and Li appeared as a guest at AMD’s CES presentation earlier in 2026. Monday’s announcement converts that operational partnership into full ownership.
For AMD, the deal carries three benefits. First, it brings one of the most recognizable figures in AI research onto the org chart at the VP level — a credibility move as AMD competes with NVIDIA for enterprise AI customers who care about research depth. Second, it adds proprietary model research that AMD can optimize hardware against, matching the model-silicon integration NVIDIA has pursued through its applied research teams. Third, World Labs’ work on spatial reasoning maps directly to robotics and autonomous systems, markets AMD is targeting with its Instinct and Versal product lines.
The $8.2 billion price tag is AMD’s largest acquisition since its $49 billion purchase of Xilinx in 2022.
Fei-Fei Li’s New Role
Li built her reputation at Stanford and through her stewardship of ImageNet, the dataset that catalyzed the deep learning era in computer vision. She served as chief scientist of AI/ML and VP at Google Cloud from 2017 to 2018. World Labs was her return to founder mode after nearly a decade in academia and corporate labs.
At AMD, she becomes the most senior AI research executive at the company. The role positions Li to shape AMD’s model development priorities alongside the roadmap for hardware features that world models require — high-bandwidth memory, persistent activation storage, and low-latency inter-chip fabric.
What Happens to World Labs’ Research
AMD says World Labs’ team will continue to focus on advancing AI model research after the deal closes. The company has not announced changes to World Labs’ product roadmap or existing partner commitments.
AMD showcased World Labs at its CES 2026 keynote, where Li appeared on stage with Lisa Su — a public alignment that the acquisition now formalises.
